Violet is travelling the world
Violet is a paper doll, born, drawn and created by students in Cote d'Ivoire, in 2006.
The students wrote a few stories about her and her stay in Cote d'Ivoire, and recounted what customary activities from Cote d'Ivoire she had taken part in. Violet then traveled to a school in the USA where, thanks to the first letters of Violet's adventures written by the students from Cote d'Ivoire, American students were able to learn a bit more about this African country. They in turn wrote a bit about Violet's stay in their country, took a few pictures with her, and sent her along with her stories to a new school in Canada. Since then, Violet has visited schools in Uruguay and Kenya. She is currently on her way to a new school in the US, before flying to Europe and most likely Asia after that...!
Her luggage gets richer and richer as her story develops around the world. The idea is that in each school she visits, students contribute to Violet's story, by adding details of their own school lives and experiences into her life.
Some schools have drawn her a coat (as she was there in winter), another one a school uniform (very typical for their country), allowing the following schools to learn about other countries through Violet's adventures.
However, Violet's story doesn't end when she leaves the respective school. Each school that participated in her story receives regular updates of her adventures through scans and photographs. This ensures the link is kept alive and students are continuously learning about Violet's cultural adventures!
Violet's story is a fun and useful "game" to be part of. Students actively learn about the lives of other children around the world by living vicariously through the extravagant travels of their paper doll creation.
